[It's been a long time since Shikamaru's failed a mission. All right. Failure might be too strong a word for this one. He can actually laugh at that. This isn't like when he was twelve. It's a personal embarrassment, not something that's going to keep him up at night, sick to his stomach.
A failure is a failure though, and that makes it a pain in the ass. He'd apologized to the MSF personnel profusely, and requested to be put on a different mission to make up for the screw-up. They'd looked nonplussed about the whole thing and stuck him back in Luceti, but eh. Shikamaru decides to keep his journal close to him anyways, in case they take him up on that. It's for this reason he doesn't go out to do any of the things he probably should. He passes the time by flipping through the journal instead, and thinking over the last mission.]

When I first came to this village, I remember going out. Left or right, it seemed anywhere I looked someone was using that so-called "filial magic". ...Haaa. [He scratches his head, and there's a smirk in his voice.] That's an exaggeration, but you get it. That was years ago, though. It seemed like it was becoming less common until that incident last year, when everyone got possessed.
Anyone learning anything from those guys now? Seems like the kind of thing that would spark interest, especially with one extra spirit hanging around.

[She knows you, Shikamaru. What's with the roundabout question?]

I was comparing which ones people are talking to. I wanted to see how many are working with Twila.

I just maintain my pacts with Sona and Nala. But I think people would have to be crazy to form a pact with something so interested in taking them over.

[Not that he doesn't get where Katara's coming from, he just has to make a point.]

[And how many different times have you told her something like THAT, Shikamaru?]

[She's Not Happy.]

[All the ways this place takes people away; all the ways it changes them and warps their mind, Katara would think that Shikamaru would try to guard what sense of self he has, instead of offering it up for being screwed with.]

Oi, oi, it's not like that. If there's something to worry about, I'll tell you. [...though saying that makes him feel like an asshole. Until ten seconds ago, he was going to ask for her help with something, and now somehow he's gotten stuck in the defensive.] But here we haven't talked in a while, and the first thing we're seriously gonna do is argue?

[Because that excuse is crap and it kind of stings that he would try get around her like that and he should know better. But as it had many times in the past few months, her passion that so quickly flared up died out. She just sounded tired.]
I don't want to fight with you either, Shikamaru. But I thought you knew better.

I'm not being controlled.
[This isn't knowing like he knows himself. This is a certainty granted from knowing the real problem.]

But?

Something weird like what.

Shikamaru?

I said... [But he doesn't want to say it again. Oh fine.] I smell.
[Filtered]
What?
[Filtered]
[Slightly squeakier, because yes he's embarrassed.]
I got knocked overboard and came out smelling like Akamaru after a swim. It's like that when I'm out in the rain for too long, too.

That's... really weird, Shikamaru. I mean, Twila doesn't have anything to do with scents.
