[After a certain conversation with Albert, Shikamaru has a job to do. He has other things he'd much rather be focusing on - Naruto's been missing for presumably days and he didn't even hear a thing - but his idea doesn't do anyone any good if he doesn't bring it up to the people who could put it into action.

This deal with Malnosso really threw a wrench into his plans. How troublesome.]

Oi, I need to talk to one of you guys.

[For anyone around Community Housing Building 1, Shikamaru can be found on the roof for most of the day, alternately staring in the direction of the barrier or pouring over the journal. Luceti has a habit of taking away his favorite form of distraction when he needs it the most, so this will have to do for now.]

[ Yeah, the roof seems like the place to be today. Chouji will be joining you up there, buddy. ]

Yeah?

I have this idea I wanted to run past one of you guys - hrm. Something just came up though. Is there someplace I could meet you in an hour or so to talk about it?

[Read: It shouldn't be discussed on the journals.]

In an hour? I should be near the outskirts of town by then. The side nearest the mountains. We could meet there?

That'll work. See ya in an hour then.

[And sure enough, about an hour later he'll be there, walking with his hands in his pockets.]

[Shikamaru glances back at him when he arrives, with a short nod.] Hey.

[And right on cue, there's Squall, Lionheart like over his shoulder just like usual. He offers a nod when he gets close.]

Yo. You the guy from the Blue Rogues?

Yeah. What did you need?

I spoke with Albert Silverburg last night on the possibility of the Malnosso retaliating against the village when this infiltration business gets going, and what we might be able to do in preparation should that happen. It was suggested that I talk to your group about it.

[Shino's bugs found you up here so... he's just going to walk up the side of the building to talk. Of course talking to Shino means he'll get to the roof and then not talk at all since he's sure his footsteps alerted you of his presence already.]

[They did, as a matter of fact. It's right up there in a basic ninja skill, after all. Shikamaru's head tilts in Shino's direction, but he doesn't look at him or say anything for now.]

[He nods]

It depends on what sort of forces the send against us. For all we've been here we don't really know what sort of forces they can offer or even what they're capable of. We'll need to prepare for unknown forces, or possibly some manner of Shift.

... I assume you've heard?

[You know. About everything. Naruto and the announcements.]

Yeah.

[He checked Naruto's place himself, and the open journal probably answers that last one.]

Which means we need to be on the lookout for anything, without making ourselves obvious. Albert mentioned that there's some patrols that regularly scout the area, but he said they're only equipped for basic observation and policing, as opposed to fighting off any Malnosso drones. It would be ideal to keep them and everyone else as close to the village as we could, but that's not going to happen. There's too many people to keep track of, for one, but it would also make us look more suspicious.

[He pauses to make sure Squall is following.]

[Squall nods. He understands just fine.]

I'm one of them. It gives me something to do and doesn't actually hurt anything in the long run.

[There's a pause as he thinks things over.]

It's not an option I'd suggest unless things get pretty bad, but some of us were given back an ability to summon creatures from our own world. The side-effects they stated for it are pretty steep, but if it's that or die...

I agree that it should only be used as a last resort. If you start summoning things when you shouldn't be, then they'll know the game's up. We need more than that if this actually happens - especially if it could be a bad end for the people having to use it.

If it meets with your approval, I have an idea. It depends on subtlety, but it would get the job done.

[Again, he nods.]

Right. We don't want to let them know they've got us panicking unless we can't help it.

I'll listen to anything, right now.

Like I said before, keeping people out of the forests and the other places they go to will just seem strange. So the idea is to slip in a defensive unit. They would act as casually as they would if they were just going out for a stroll, but their real mission would be to keep an eye out for anything weird. Some people here have certain abilities that could let them survey a lot more area than others, so they'd be ideal for it. We could also use teleporters to relay information.

If anything happens, these guys would have the advantage of acting against the Malnosso when they least expect it, and helping anyone that strays from the village. Meanwhile, the unit closest to town are still nearby to help if they strike there first. It covers nearly all of our bases.

How soon could you have those units arranged?

That depends on how much information I get. I haven't been in Luceti long enough to know everything that the people here can do. I know about three people who'd be reliable for sure, if they're up for it. And a couple more who might be trustworthy volunteers. If you have anyone that you could recommend for the job, I'm all ears.

Once I knew who we can use, I could have the units arranged in an hour. Picking them is the tough part.

You could try Sora and Terra. They might also know a few other people who might be good to have.

It may be wise if we discussed things

["We" could mean with Chouji, or just the two of them since he might have already spoken to Chouji.]

Probably. [He flips through the pages of his journal, and something more professional slips into his voice.] As much as I hate it, there's nothing we can do for Naruto while this shit is going on.
