The stag seems pretty content to follow him around - even into town or just standing around when he sits - despite sticking to the tree-lined paths when he can. Shikamaru talks to him sometimes.

[He's imagining this now. A Yeti with a woman in hand, climbing a building and waving her around, while the rest of the team try to get her back.

Maybe some of her team can even fly, and are circling about, trying to snatch her back.
