[The afternoon finds Shikamaru bundled up against the cold and out and about in parts of the village he won't normally be in. Wandering, it might look like; he drifts in and out of high-traffic areas like the bar and the item shop to places less visited. The coffee shop he'll be at for sure, and his final stop will be the building that was once Azzip's Pizza.

[Later in the afternoon, with dark still far off, the journal feed will click on to see Shikamaru surrounded by various colorful boxes among other things. He folds his hands over a table.]

It's come to my attention over the last few months that some of you have never heard of boardgames, or have otherwise never played. As a reasonable guy, I can let a lot of things go, but that... just seems sad.

[He shakes his head here. With woe, even. And then he gestures to the board games from various worlds strewn in the background. Close inspection will find a shogi set, a chess board, Go, Pai Sho, Plateau, Candy Land, Mouse Trap, ~~Jumanji~~ and so on. You can pretty much make up any family-friendly board game you want here and he will have it somehow. Go for it, actually. He hasn't played all of them.]

I'm here to tell you why they're awesome. [...] And possibly to petition for a partner. It's troublesome, but you'd be surprised how hard that is to accomplish here...

Katara. [Hint, hint.] Kotomi-chan. [Who he can't tease as well, so he'd best clarify:] If you're still up for that.

[He shakes himself with a grin, saluting at the journal with his left hand. He picks up the nearest game.] Anyways, let's get started. It goes like this...

[Much later in the night, after he's seen to everything he needs to, Shikamaru takes a box out of a drawer and goes outside. From it, he withdraws an origami hummingbird, and contemplates it slowly for a few quiet minutes.

When he's done, he holds it up at eye level and speaks seriously.]

It's about time we spoke again. Don't you think?

[Aang takes a closer look himself.]

Oi, she's not the only medic I know. [He moves his thumb and the collar of his shirt falls back in place covering it.] My teammate is a med-nin. She's been taking care of it for me.

[And he handwaves like that should be that, stepping around the litter of boxes on the floor. They were here to play a game, right?]

Ino is? [ She's assuming, since that's the only person from Shikamaru's "team" who is here. And is female. ] I didn't know that!

[ She's going to glance at the boxes, reading the titles off and such. ]

Well as long as someone's taken care of it, that's fine!

[And his eyes are also drawn towards the game boxes, with a gleam shining in his eyes.]

[He gives them both a thumbs-up before finding the Candyland game.]

Okay, this is the one you guys came here for.

[ like. as pieces. ]

Yeah, what kinds are there?

I told you guys it's just how the board works, remember?

[He takes a seat and picks up the little gingerbread kid pieces. There's four colors: red, yellow, blue, and green.]

We play with these. You can each pick one. [He points to the cards.] And those all relate to squares on the board, more of which are color spaces than candy-themed ones.

I want yellow!!! [ DIBS. ]

Red please!

[He wanted yellow.]

[Shikamaru hands them each their piece and picks green for himself.]

Now we all start on this end here, and take turns drawing cards. I already shuffled them, so Ikki can go first.

[He points to the pile.] Just pick the top one.

[ She does so readily - and, hey! Yellow. ]

Yellow!! ...Now what?

[Aang looks back and forth between them with eager anticipation.]

You move your guy there to the closest yellow space. Aang takes his turn after you.

[ Ikki...DOES SO. It's very thrilling and she looks very proud. Yellow on yellow! ]

[And Aang beams at her proudly before he pulls his own card.][He does so hesitantly, while looking for Shikamaru for approval.]

[Wow bro, this isn't rocket science. Go for it.]

[ SERIOUSLY grandpa. She wants to go again! ]

Purple! The one closest right?

[And he excitedly places his piece there, which is near the starting point.]

That's right.

[Shikamaru picks an orange card and moves his piece.]

I didn't explain the point of the game before, so I'll do so now. [He points from the start of the path to the end of it.] Straightforward, it's a race game. The first person to the end wins.

[ And Ikki pulls - Gumdrop Mountain? Which is the first "special" location, maybe five spaces ahead of where she is. ...She'll just move her yellow person marker there, while glancing at Shikamaru for approval. ]

Gumdrop Mountain? Looks delicious!

[Aang just gets a red card and does some more movements.]

[He gives her a thumbs-up and takes his turn, losing his lead.]

Those cards are what we call a Catch 22, you know.

How do you mean? I mean, what's that?

[ Blue! Moving ahead a few more spots. ]
